FREE HALF-DAY FOR CLASSROOM DRONE ESSENTIALS WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS A more readable program should have been emailed to you by your association, but information on the sessions is below, with a schedule for the day following. IF YOU ARE ATTENDING THE SIMULTANEOUS "SHE MAPS CLASSROOM DRONE ESSENTIAL" WORKSHOPS you are able to choose two sessions in the morning or afternoon if you wish to combine that event with this one.  You will choose your sessions at registration.  Session information SESSION ONE Option 1 Title:                   Approaches to Online Learning Presenter:         Bruce Cameron Location:            E17 Description:       COVID19 forced teachers into considering teaching by distance. What many of us discovered is that some principles of distance education can assist with student engagement and practice even in the face-to-face environment. Working with Stage 2 English at both Darwin High School and NTSDE allowed me to use many of my video lessons as a supplement for absent or disengaged classroom learners. Creating your own video content for your class is easy to do with just a few tools and a little courage. Let me show you how. Option 2 Title:                   Meet the author              Presenter:         Sean Guy Location:            E16 Description:      Sean Guy is an Australian author and screenwriter. He has several novels published across a series of genres, and is also known for his work on short sketch films. Alongside the local amateur production company “Big Dog Salad” Sean has written and produced over a dozen comedic shorts, including one where two salesmen discuss the validity of a new type of calendar, where weekends are sold separately. He is also currently working on a feature film script about the Bombing of Darwin, for local filmmakers SD Productions. Option 3 Title:                   A teaching toolbox for humanising confronting and controversial topics      Presenter:         Amanda Tully and Raine Caldwell Location:            E23 Description: The English and Humanities classrooms are places where students engage with confronting and controversial topics. Join Amanda and Raine to look at how to create a safe and supportive environment to promote student learning. SESSION TWO Option 1 Title:                   Just telling stories …     Presenter:         Barry Jonsberg Location:            E11 Description: All about stories: take away a video for classroom use on story elements like conflict, description, abstract versus concrete words, show, don’t tell. But really Barry Jonsberg just wants to tell you stories about stories … Option 2 Title:                   Competitions and the Curriculum Presenter:         Nelly Labiche and Charleen Conroy Location:            E23 Description: This workshop will bust the myth that competitions are additional work. There are lots of ways that both English and Humanities teachers across the primary to senior years can incorporate competitions in their practice to benefit both themselves and students No option 3   SESSION THREE Option 1 Title:                   Teaching the Holocaust through text: Once by Morris Gleitzam            Presenter:         Steve Hawkins Location:            E17 Description: Novel studies don’t always need to be about structures and features. Teachers can choose texts with challenging but important themes to help students better understand major global issues and events. In this session, teachers will explore how ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman is used to help middle school aged students to learn about the events of the Holocaust. The focus of the session will be adaptable to other texts on big themes that teachers may want to use. Option 2 Title:                   Who are our heroes? Presenter:         Cody Clifford, Nicole Everett, John Oakman and Raine Caldwell Location:            E16 Description: Who are our heroes? What makes them heroic? Join Cody and Raine to look at the archetypes of the hero and the hero’s journey. Nicole will look at how she uses heroes to introduce students to critical perspectives. Finally, John will look a modern day hero.  Option 3 Title:                   Making it Stick – Retention and Retrieval Techniques Presenter:         Anna Hind Location:            E23 Description:       Students forget what we teach them. One strategy which aims to reduce this 'forgetting' is retrieval practice: a set of strategies and classroom activities designed to encourage knowledge retention in our students. This workshop explains the theory and practical application of retrieval practice as it can be applied to any subject at any age level. Teachers will be provided with a range of resources and examples, specific to English and Humanities, for use in their own classrooms.   SESSION FOUR Title:                   Pixar English - using short films to explore text structures and features Presenter:         Steve Hawkins Location:            E17 Description: If your students are anything like mine, they have the attention span of gnats. I've found using Pixar short films a fantastic way of introducing exploring a range of language and structure features, such as narrative arcs, the features of short stories and film techniques. This workshop will share some of these ideas, suitable for middle years or lower ability senior years students.   Title:                   Exploring visual texts – The Rabbits Presenter:         Rachel Fegan Location:            E16 Description: Rachel will use The Rabbits to present a series of interactive activities designed to engage students with visual texts.   Title:                   Civics and Citizenship  Presenter:         Karen Parker Location:            E23 Description: In this session, Karen Parker from the NT Electoral Commission will discuss strategies and activities that can be used in middle school and senior school classes to improve student knowledge of the systems and structures of our political systems.

Sidney Nolan exhibition - end of year GHTANT function
Museum and Art Gallery of Northern Territory
16:30 – 17:30
GHTANT has arranged an end-of-year function for members for a private tour and presentation of the Sidney Nolan exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Entry is free for members, and members are invited to bring a colleague who may not be a GHTANT member. Nibbles provided.  This event will be very helpful for exploring the 2020 National History Challenge topic relating to Contested Histories. We will provide resources on how you can embed this exhibition into your teaching and learning program.  From the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory webiste: Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly series Sidney Nolan’s 1946-47 paintings depicting the 19th century bush ranger Ned Kelly are among the most significant Australian paintings of the 20th century.  Nolan’s Ned Kelly series is a distillation of a complex, layered story set in the Victorian landscape and centred around a nineteenth-century bushranger and his gang who were on the run from the police. Landscape is a key element in the paintings—as Nolan said, ‘it began in the landscape and ended in the landscape’. The series also depends upon a loosely threaded but vital dramatic human narrative that has its catalyst with Constable Fitzpatrick and Kate Kelly 1946 in the domestic arena of the Kelly family home where a fracas occurs, and ends with The trial 1947, in a Melbourne courtroom where Ned Kelly is sentenced to death. The marriage of a feeling for the environment and human drama imbues these paintings with meaning and poetic resonance. While the legendary aspect is informed by social history, some of the paintings are embellished by Nolan’s lively imagination.

GHTANT/ETANT Mini-conference
Casuarina Senior College - Library
09:00 – 14:00
After the success of our GHTANT/ETANT miniconference events in Darwin and Alice Springs in 2018, we have teamed up again to provide an event for teachers on Saturday April 6 2019. GHTANT members and other humanities teachers are very welcome to attend! In 2019 our Darwin event attracted over 70 teachers and we hope for a strong turnout again this year. GHTANT will be running four workshops, with ETANT running workshops in addition to sessions with local and visiting authors. GHTANT members are very welcome to attend any of the sessions (we know cross-discipline teaching is common!) GHTANT sessions are: 1) Bringing HASS to Life: participants will explore a range of activities that can better engage students, and will walk away with ideas they can embed in their own classes to inspire and motivate students to learn about the humanities. (Charleen Conroy, Dripstone MS) 2) Historical Sources Escape Room: okay, not technically an "escape room" but an activity where students analyse sources to unlock a mystery box! This workshop will guide teachers on how they can successfully deliver an engaging activity on sources! (Steve Hawkins, CSC) 3) Using Thinglink: Thinglink is an online tool that allows for the easy annotation of images and films. It is a great way to involve technology in annotating maps or historical sources, and can easily be applied in English classes, too. Please bring a device! (Steve Hawkins, CSC) 4) Inquiry-based learning - making it work:  this session will provide a range of useful tips and strategies to create more successful inquiry-based learning activities in HASS classes. Inquiries can be poorly delivered, and this workshop will provide useful advice to making inquiry-based learning relevant and engaging. (Raine Caldwell, CSC) ENTANT information below!!
