GHTANT is excited to be returning to Alice Springs after some time away. We are presenting a range of workshops to support humanities teachers, while also including some cross-curriculum sessions that will be of interest to those teaching in other areas.

Cartoons in the classroom
The communicative power of cartoons lies in their ability to present often-complex issues, events and trends in a simplified and accessible form. This session will explore the skills of cartoon analysis in the Humanities classroom. It will also explore ways to teach students how to create their own cartoons.

Historical concepts: focus on Change and Continuity
Historical concepts underpin the study of History. This session will provide an overview of how to introduce the Historical concepts to your classes. It will unpack the concept of Change and Continuity which is this year’s National History Challenge theme. The session will end with the launching of the National History Challenge.

Setting Students up for Success
What do students need to be able to do to succeed in History? Essentially, they need to be able to use a range of sources to construct and argument. The first part of this workshop will focus on how to have fun with sources analysis, while encouraging students to effectively analyse and evaluate a range of sources to assess their usefulness to historians investigating a topic. The second part of the workshop will look at how to develop questions, construct a historical argument and write a response. Teachers will leave this session with classroom tested resources and strategies.
The workshop is aimed at Middle Years and Senior History Teachers.

Creative Responses in Humanities
Humanities tasks can be creative and fun, but they need to meet the assessment criteria for the learning area. Sometimes students can become too focused on the creative element of the task and forget that they need to show evidence of research and critical thinking. This workshop will look at task design across different learning areas and provide teachers with strategies to develop a more creative approach to assessment.
This workshop is aimed at all HASS teachers.

Teaching and the Teenage Brain
Have you ever felt that your students can’t remember anything they have been taught? Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed when learning something new? Don’t worry this is a perfectly normal part of learning. Understanding how the brain processes information will help us to develop lessons and sequence information more effectively. This session will draw on both cognitive science and educational theory to examine how to ovoid cognitive overload, while maximizing student learning. It will also provide participants with strategies to ensure students remember what they learn.
This session is suitable for all teachers.
